Find the tempo of any song by tapping

A BPM tapper is the fastest way to measure how fast a piece of music is. Play the track, listen for the steady pulse, and tap the button once on every beat. After just a couple of taps you will see a tempo in beats per minute (BPM), and the more you tap the more accurate it becomes. The tool times the gaps between your taps and converts the average gap into BPM, so a few naturally uneven taps are smoothed out into a stable number.

This is invaluable for DJs matching tracks, drummers setting a click, dancers choosing routines, and producers who want to know the tempo of a reference song before recreating its groove. Because it relies on your own sense of the beat, it works with any audio source โ€” streaming, vinyl, a live band or a tune stuck in your head โ€” without needing access to the audio itself.

How the calculation works

Each tap records a timestamp. The time between two consecutive taps is one beat's duration, and dividing 60,000 milliseconds by that duration gives the BPM. Using a single interval would be jumpy, so this tapper keeps a moving average of your recent intervals. That averaging filters out small timing errors and converges on the true tempo within a handful of taps. If you stop tapping for a couple of seconds, the tool assumes you are starting a new measurement and clears the old intervals automatically, so an accidental long pause never skews the result.

Tips for an accurate reading

Tap on the strong, obvious beat โ€” usually where you would naturally nod your head or count "one, two, three, four". Keep tapping for at least eight beats to let the average settle, and try the spacebar instead of the mouse if clicking feels awkward. If the number looks doubled or halved, you may be tapping on every half-beat or every other beat; reset and tap on the main pulse instead. Everything runs locally in your browser, with no audio access, uploads or tracking.

Frequently asked questions

How many taps do I need?
Two taps give a first estimate, but four or more produce a much steadier reading because the tool averages the intervals between your taps.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Press the spacebar or Enter to register a tap, which many people find more accurate than clicking.
What does the average do?
It uses a moving average of recent tap intervals, so a single uneven tap has little effect and the BPM settles quickly on the true tempo.
When should I reset?
Reset whenever you switch songs or lose the beat. A long pause between taps also starts a fresh measurement automatically.
